Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) Study

Have you had an ERPO? We want to hear from you!

An Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO, “red flag order”) is a judge’s order to prevent access to guns by people in crisis who are thought to be at risk for harming themselves or others.

Study purpose: Conduct one-time, confidential interviews with people who have experienced an ERPO to understand its impacts on their lives.

Eligibility: Adults whose ERPO started 5 months ago or longer

What’s involved: One virtual interview lasting 45-60 minutes

  • Questions will cover what led to receiving an ERPO, how it affected your life since then, and whether the ERPO helped with crisis prevention or connection to services.
  • You may skip any questions that make you uncomfortable. All of your information will be kept confidential.
  • Participants will receive a $50 e-gift card for completing the interview.
  • This consent form has additional information.

Who are we?  The ERPO interview study is part of a larger project at the Duke University School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences. It is led by Dr. Michele Easter and Dr. Allison Gilbert and funded by the Elizabeth K. Dollard Charitable Trust.
