COPS Accountability Act of 2020



To require the use of body cameras for law enforcement officers as a condition of eligibility for COPS ON THE BEAT grants, and for other purposes.

In order to be eligible to receive grant funding from the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act, the government in question must – over the course of, at minimum, 3 years (detailed below) – increase the percentage of its police force that is required to wear a body camera. These are uniformed officers who have the authority to conduct searches and make arrests.
Year 1 – must have a plan in place to implement policies for Year 2
Year 2 – at least 25% of the force must use body cameras
Year 3 – at least 50% of the force must use body cameras
